Why Many of Us are Becoming Less Productive During Coronavirus

I had one meeting yesterday.

I missed it.

The good news is, when I wrote to apologize to the convener, she informed me that the meeting hadn’t happened. It had been canceled because another key member of the group had forgotten about another item on his schedule, creating a conflict.

I didn’t know that, of course. And when I re-examined the email reminding me and others about this meeting, I also noted it had been rescheduled from a week before.

I apologized anyway. In my email reply, I admitted “Well, that’s good news for me, I guess. It’s surprising how bad I have been at managing my schedule while homebound!”

Her reply included her own confession contained within the exclamation, “I know!”

And I have to admit, I missed two other meetings last week. These were less significant, more like online information sessions where I was a spectator instead of an active participant. However, usually my calendar is sacrosanct. I hit my marks.

I’ve talked with others who have expressed this same frustration — they are missing meetings or generally disoriented relative to their schedules and to-do lists. Generally, these are people who cannot do all of their work from home, or find their work severely curtailed due to COVID-19. (Other people, the ones who are able to work…
